Kathryn L. Safford
serves as medical director for WINGS (Women Involved in Nurturing, Giving,
Sharing), a non-profit Texas corporation dedicated to providing top-quality
breast care to uninsured and underinsured women in Central and South Texas.
A native of South Dakota, Safford has been a practicing surgeon since 1977.
She was graduated from the Medical College of Wisconsin with a U.S. Army
Reserve Commission. She completed her residency at Brooke Army Hospital in San
Antonio. In 1983 she left active duty as a major and entered private practice
specializing in diseases of the breast.
On staff at Southwest Texas Methodist Hospital since 1983, Safford has served
the hospital in several capacities. In 1993 she was elected chief of staff a
position she held the following year. Most recently she chaired the hospital's
Bioethics and Cancer Study & Education Committees.
She also enjoys courtesy staff privileges at other area hospitals.
A cancer survivor, Safford currently serves on the boards of directors for
Methodist Healthcare Ministries, Methodist HealthCare System, Susan G. Komen
Foundation and is medical director for the American Cancer Society's Reach for
Recovery program.
She is certified by the American Board of Surgery and is a Fellow of the
American College of Surgeons.
